After his ordination as a diocesan priest in Rome, where he was a classmate of the future pope, Leo XIII, he was the first native Hollander to become a Redemptorist. In 1834, he had the added distinction of being the first to preach a parish
mission in the French language in Belgium. This took place in Themister and under the personal direction of the disciple of St. Clement, Joseph Passerat. When he came to the United States as vice-provincial he had to his credit 15 busy years of
tremendous experience giving parish missions, having been in that kind of work almost exclusively during that time. He could give the fruit of those many years of work to the American scene where it was so sorely needed. (Taken from praiseofglory.com.)
